Rocket League has been on the PS4 for the last year or so, and has now made its way over to Xbox One. I had checked out some videos on the game when it was announced to see what it was about and how it played.
A lot of the time it can be hard to gauge how a game plays and feels when watching streams, but initial my initial thoughts were I wouldn’t enjoy it, it looks quite fast paced and a bit of a cluster to play.
After I started playing the game my views changed. I absolutely loved the carnage that each match brought, but with that carnage, I loved how smooth the gameplay was. I know you’ll probably say that a lot of the time there isn’t much going on on the screen for the framerate to drop, but when you have loads of cars on the screen flying around, jumping all going for an ever moving ball, you would have thought that when everyone comes together there maybe little blips. but there was nothing.
There was one thing that annoyed me about the matches, and this has nothing to do with the game, but more the people playing it. Whenever I was playing in an online mode I would always find that people on my own team would barge into me knocking me out of the way, and I don’t mean when we’re going for the ball, I mean purposely ram into me, which at times the ball has then come towards the goal and I have been out of position to make the save, and it has gone bad. Bad form.
Now, for those who don’t know or have never heard of this game before, you may be wondering what is this game Rocket League? What do you have to do? Well the easiest way for me to describe this game is saying that it’s a mash up between Football and Micro Machines…. Anyone remember the Micro Machines racing game? They were good times! Anyway I digress.
The main aim of the game is that you're basically playing football matches with a giant ball and you’re in cars and have to score as many goals as you can in 5 minutes. There are a range of different matches from 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4.
There are both online and offline elements to the game, which range from typical online matches playing against other people in certain playsets, to playing on your own with AI in season modes and training modes which help you get ready for the battles ahead. If you’re a noob to this game, I would suggest giving the tutorial a quick go to get used to the controls.
The controls aren’t confusing, as its RT to go, and B to fire your boosts off when you have some available in your meter. Then just use the sticks to control the vehicle, simples.
A very extensive customise option is included in the game so that you can jazz up your car. You can change the body of your car, the paint job, add hats to your car, decals, as well as an assortment of flags and other paraphernalia.
In the single player modes that you can play, there are exhibition matches as well as a season which you can play through. The exhibition matches are your basic one off matches that you can customise and play to your hearts content, whereas the seasons mode is as it says on the tin. You can play through a season, which again like most of the game is very customisable in terms of its length and the teams which you can choose from.
There is a reply function within the game, which you can save some of your best performances and matches too and watch at a later date. I haven’t used this yet, but I have saved a couple of goals from my first few games, which you can view in the video below. :)
There isn’t really much I can say about this game, i’ve mentioned all the main features of it and what they do, if you’re still on the fence about getting this game, and aren’t sure from watching streams, take it from me, take the plunge and get the game. It’s worth the money and you will have so much fun with it.
Im going to give Rocket League a 9. There’s plenty for people to do either online or in single player.
