Review

Need For Speed Rivals is the first next-gen game for the hugely popular franchise and it's good......very good.

You get the choice of playing as either cop or racer at the start and after that choice is made you can switch effortlessly between the two careers.

As a racer your main aim is to race and as a cop your main aim is to 'bust' racers.

To help each career there are various Pursuit Tech gadgets to make things difficult for your opponent.

The multiplayer part of the game is where the fun begins.

Players can set their worlds' status to one of three settings, Public, Private, or Friends Only These settings determine how the game will try to make your match online.

Public will try to match make to a public game containing friends first, then will try to fit you into a game with a free slot. If neither are possible, you'll simply create a new public game.

Private is basically invite-only, and others can only join your world if you invite them to it.

Friends only will allow friends to either race into your game on their own, or well as be invited into your game.

The 'All Drive' system works really well and the open world aspect means you're not restricted to where you go and what order you do things in. If you just want to race then you can select 'races' from the All Drive menu and the map shows you where they all are.

All event types can be played in online multiplayer, including:
Spontaneous Race – Race against opponents from any point in the world to a pre-determined finish point.
Race Event – Pre-determined races with defined routes from start to finish
Getaway – One Racer chased by a number of cops Time Attack – Single-player game mode where players compete to be the fastest driver over a set route.
Spontaneous Pursuit – Cop pursues Racers starting from any point in the world
Hot Pursuit – Cops pursue a whole field of Racers, with their goal to wreck them before they can finish their race.
Rapid Response – Single player cop-event where Cops start with a score-pool that ticks down over time, and gets reduced for reckless driving. Finish the event with as much score as possible left in the pool.
Interceptor – Cops chase a specific AI Racer on a route, and try to take them down in time.

The cars available in the game include models from such giants as Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes Benz among others. Graphically it's a pretty game and the frame rate is 30fps at 1080p, it doesn't look as polished or vibrant as Forza Motorsport 5 or the upcoming Forza Horizon 2 but it still looks good and plays very smoothly.

Now I'm the first to admit that I'm not the best at driving/racing games but I found that Rivals was still
fun to play and I find myself going back to try and better my time-trials and more importantly get to the
top of my friends leaderboards.
