Review
With the plethora of AAA games out at the moment such as CoD:AW, Sunset Overdrive, Halo MCC etc etc, it's easy for ID games such as this one to fly under a majority of gamers radars.
This is a shame as Defense Grid 2 is a very cool Tower Defense game that is lots of fun to play.
The aim of the game is very simple in essence but, with some of the level designs, it can be very tricky to achieve. You have to stop the aliens from advancing to the power core and stealing it.
To do this you have to place towers strategically to fire upon the marauding horde and bring their light fingered shenanigans to a very definite end.
There are a number of different towers ranging from the basic Gun towers, progressing on towards Inferno Towers, Missile Towers , Tesla Towers and many more inbetween. Each tower is upgradable using the resources you gain from killing the aliens.
There are 21 missions in the story mode which can be played by yourself or co-operatively with a friend. The story is told in the loading screens and also by the constant AI chatter whilst you play the levels.
The levels start off REALLY easily but soon progress into those where you will have to give your strategy and tower placement some serious thought, if you mess up on a particular section you do have the option to 'rewind' and try it again which is a cool feature.
One of the things that will keep me going back again and again is the leaderboards, I'm a competitive soul and as such the replayabilty is turned up a notch for me as I will play a level many times over in an attempt to climb to the top of my friends leaderboard.
Multiplayer has the aforementioned co-op storyline available as well as 'Fighter' which is a competitive mode where the aliens that you kill are transported over to your opponents board to cause havoc.
Graphically DG:2 is a very accomplished game, the level design is really good with vibrant colours and cool looking towers and I was very impressed with the general look of each level. The audio is functional but in later levels when there is lots of action it's hard to distinguish the different sounds that each tower makes.
In conclusion I would recommend DG:2 and would go as far to say that it's the best Tower Defense game on the console to date.
I have no hesitation in giving it a very solid 80%.
