Review
Now I hadn't heard of this title before I was sent a copy to review so I'm pretty much a Tower Defense virgin and as such had no preconceptions about how the game could/should be.
Upon pressing A to start you are taken to the main screen where you choose either Single Player or Multiplayer. You can view Achievements and Leaderboards from here too and I suspect the Leaderboards will play a big part in most peoples thoughts as you try to beat your friends and get as high as you can on the Global scale.
Multiplayer gives you the option of Online or Local to try your skills. As this is a review copy the opportunity to try Online Multiplayer wasn't available so I can't comment on the speediness of finding a match or how it plays Online.
Single Player has 4 different modes to try, Campaign, Skirmish , Survival and Hero Survival.
Campaign is just that.... a story driven adventure that gently guides you through the basics that you'll need to advance through the game.
Skirmish is where you try to defend your castle and flag against AI opponents and seems to be a good place to hone your skills and earn gold to use for upgrades (more on those later)
Survival is a mode where you have to defeat increasingly difficult waves of enemies to stop them either destroying your castle or capturing your flag.
Hero Survival is just you playing as Sir Gareth against wave after wave of training dummies and soldiers in an arena. The aim of this mode is to stop them capturing your flag and leaving the arena.
The gold that you earn throughout the game is used to upgrade your soldiers and weapons to make them do more damage or regenerate quicker.
Your main weapon is a Ballista that fires, among other things, Arrows(Javelins), Morningstars( Spiky Balls), Apple Grenades and Homing Eagles. There are 4 more slots that I have yet to unlock and I look forward to finding out what else I shall be able to fire. I suspect one of those things will be a Sheep as they seem to be in the campaign story alot.
The Troops you can use are fully upgradeable and there are 9 different types, although I've only as yet unlocked 3 of them.
Spells are another thing you can use on the battlefield but again I haven't unlocked enough to go into any detail.
I've played all 4 modes and enjoyed them all and can see myself coming back to this game again and again.
The cartoony graphics fit well with the mood of what is going on on the screen and the background music and sound effects are satisfyingly unobtrusive. The sound your sword or arrow makes when it hits a fleshy target is a gratifying wet sounding thunk.
Control wise.....I can see how a mouse and keyboard combination is more suited to this type of game BUT saying that, I was surprised at how quickly I mastered controlling everything with a controller. The one bad point I would have to make is that the left stick is REALLY sensitive which sometimes makes aiming the perfect shot pretty difficult.
There is also a Tower Construction Editor included that allows you to build the perfect Castle to use in battle.
In conclusion I have to say that I would recommend this game to anyone and give it a healthy 80%. It's fun to play and
challenging too.
Congratulation Zen Studios....you have my Tower Defense virginity and I didn't mind giving it up at all.
