Titanfall Review

Everyone was hyped about this game, with the trailers that had been released, and as it got closer and closer to the release day, everyone who had an Xbox One seemed to be getting very excited.

People who had played it had said how good it was, that it was a breath of fresh air for FPS' and that it was something that the genre needed. I wasn't convinced. I couldn't seem to jump on the hype train. At the time I had my PS4, and was quite content with it. Although being an Xbox boy and seeing how Xbox was turning things around, it was convincing me to swap. When I swapped over it was just before Titanfall was released, as I hadn't been able to play any of the beta, I was still in the dark about the game and unsure whether I wanted to make the purchase. Sure I could watch endless amounts of videos on YouTube, but it wasn't the same as having the controller in your hand and getting your character to kick someone in the face, or throw a satchel charge at a hardpoint or flag for epic denials.

[pullquote]The more I watched or read about the game, the more dubious I became. Was this game going to be for me? Was it going to be another CoD let down? [/pullquote]After all the people making it were those who had left IW to start their own company. In the end I took the plunge, and have I regretted it? Not one second, when people where saying that it was a breath of fresh air to the genre, and was the new IP it needed, they were right. Wallrunning, Titans, kicking people in the face, punching Pilots with a Titans bare fist... What more could you want. The game feels loose, and easy to manage, the menus are easy to navigate, and games for the most part are quick to find. However with the latest updates to the matchmaking there is a fair wait before your placed into a lobby or another team are found for you to play against. One thing I will say about the lobbies are that the wait between matches.... Do they honestly have to be that long? Then if people on your team (If you're not in a party with friends) or the opposite team drop out, then there's a good chance it may find another lobby for you, and you have to wait even longer. This will hopefully change to be shorter in time, however it could be needed due to the matchmaking system. The regen system as well is good, it's not just a simple case of getting to Level 50 and boom... Regen... (Well the first one is)... From Gen 2 there are challenges that need completing before you can Regen... I will add the list to this later on, but obviously the further up the ladder you go, the harder they become....well... for some people at least. As I've spotted a few Gen 10s about already!

The one thing that does get to me, is the amount of weapons available. Very short supply of weapons, and for those of us who like Auto Assault Rifles, there is but one available. The Carbine. You may say that there are 2 SMGs there to use. Yes, OK fair enough. But with the ARs there is an element of distance as well. With an SMG over distance you don't really stand a chance.

[pullquote]The graphics are beautiful, and the maps are well laid out[/pullquote]People who were disappointed that it was only going to be 6 a side now know that is enough. I know there have been people who have experienced problems with the game, and this is varying problems, some of which I believe have already been looked into and sorted. One issue I was having was at certain points in the game, there was a dramatic frame rate drop. However this only ever happened when there were 10 titans smashing the hell out of each other, and you had Rocket Salvos flying about left right and centre. Thankfully, any other time when there aren't many Titans, the game is perfectly fine for myself, and the inclusion of dedicated servers and use of the cloud can only help that.[/restab]

Frontiers Edge sees the second set of the three DLC packs release for Titanfall. With it, it bring maps called Dig Site, Export, and Haven, all of which are big maps! Especially Dig Site which is an enormous map!

Haven's setting is a beautiful beach resort, vibrant in colours, it seems the ideal setting to pack your bags and go for a nice break... That is until the Titans and Pilots come along. Its a fairly big map with the outer section that surrounds the entire map being available for Titans for roam with a few sections in the middle of the town they can get to. Whereas the many buildings and levels will keep Pilots entertained. The map offers both Snipers and CQC (Close Quarters Combat) plenty of room to play with, so whether you're in it for the "long" (being referenced to Snipers) game or whether you like the run and gun battles, this map will have plenty for every game type!

Dig site is by far the biggest map of the 3. Based in a mining complex there's no end of room for Titans to roam about, whether it be at the far end section of the map, or the narrow gullys within the centre of the map, there's plenty of room for battle. This map is a huge benefit for Snipers as there are at points, massive gaps between areas and buildings, and there's plenty of rooftop space for a Sniper to set up camp and pick people off. There is an achievement for this map, to get 12 pilot kills in a match. Not impossible, but I think due to the sheer size of the map, and how up and down it is, this could be a tricky one to get.

Export is my favourite map of the 3. Within the map you can go from roof to roof across the vast amount of buildings. There is also a 'Trap' on this map, where once activated, if an enemy is to get in its way will end up killing them, and if you haven't done it yet, then it will activate an Achievement at the end of the match.

I have to admit that I love the style of the maps, they seem well laid out, and complement the game modes available. Specially Export on Capture the Flag, as there is a zip line that can take you over half the way home. Only problem with it, is that its right across the middle of the map, so you're pretty much in view of everyone!

This again is another strong map pack that has been brought out. I love these maps, they work well and compliment the other maps in the game! I would highly recommend these maps to any one!

  1. Brilliant game which is so easy to pick up and play. If you're familiar with FPS then this has elements of the most popular franchises AND more. Wall running, wall hanging, Titans and it's all played at top speed. If you like to camp then this game is NOT for you. Weapons are limited but WHO CARES ??? Attrition (Team Deathmatch) and Pilot Hunter are the only modes where playing alone is really feasible, CTF, Domination and Last Titan Standing are best played with a party of friends who communicate well. This is where Titanfall really comes into it's own, some of my best moments on Live have come in the last few weeks where I've played with the owner of this site (Go Joon!!) and his friends who have welcomed me into their xbox family and made me feel at home instantly. Love you guys and I LOVE this game.
